Montgomery, who turned 29 this June, had a reduced role in Detroit’s backfield last season and was unhappy with his limited touches. The trade comes after Lions GM Brad Holmes said he would “love” to keep Montgomery but acknowledged the player’s desire to move on.
The deal saves the Lions roughly $3.5 million in cap room, though they will need to find a replacement. Potential free‑agency options include Brian Robinson, Najee Harris, Michael Carter and Emari Demercado.
